Parents and Rent Burdened

When my partner and I got pregnant almost two years ago, we were both living in apartments with four other people. We applied for family housing. Administrators informed us that we would not get a place until near the baby’s due date so we began looking for a studio apartment. In the months of searching, we were met with $100 application fees and continual denials because our income was too low.

Lucky, a friend was subleasing her apartment and we were able to move in. A week before our child was born, we received an apartment in family housing. We spend 37% of our income on rent alone. We have thousands of dollars worth of medical bills from the delivery—some of which are in collections.
